Microscope Smith&Beck "The Educational" (c.1857)
El origen de la compañía se encuentra en la unión de James Smith con el sobrino del famoso diseñador de objetivos para microscopios J.J. Lister, Richard Beck en 1847 después de emplearlo como aprendiz. En 1857, se unió a la compañía el hermano de este último, Joseph, con lo que ésta pasó a denominarse Smith&Beck&Beck. En 1865 el fundador se retiró, y el nombre de la compañía volvió a cambiar, esta vez a la definitiva R&J Beck que perduró hasta el siglo XX. Los hermanos Beck se caracterizaron por introducir en el mercado un buen número de modelos económicos que pusieron los microscopios al alcance de mucha gente con una calidad muy alta. Entre ellos destacan el Nº 1 y Nº 2“ como ejemplares de mayor nivel y el Nº 3 (“Popular”) y Nº 4 (“Universal”) como modelos más económicos. Otros famosos modelos fueron “La Lechera (Milk Box)”, “El Económico” y finalmente el “Star”. Los objetivos de las dos gamas también eran diferentes, pero aún así, mantenían una altísima calidad.
The origin of the company is found in the union of James Smith with the nephew of the famous designer of objectives for microscopes J.J. Lister, Richard Beck in 1847 after employing him as an apprentice. In 1857, the latter's brother, Joseph, joined the company, renaming it Smith&Beck&Beck. In 1865 the founder retired, and the name of the company changed again, this time to the definitive R&J Beck that lasted until the 20th century. The Beck brothers were characterized by introducing a good number of economical models to the market that put microscopes within the reach of many people with very high quality. Among them, the No. 1 and No. 2 stand out as higher level models and the No. 3 (“Popular”) and No. 4 (“Universal”) as cheaper models. Other famous models were “La Lechera (Milk Box)”, “El Economico” and finally the “Star”. The lenses of the two ranges were also different, but still maintained a very high quality.
